Rumtse to Tso Moriri Trek

Rumtse to Tso Moriri is one of the best treks in Ladakh for trekkers who want remoteness, repeated high passes, and the stark open feeling of the Changthang plateau. It is a challenging trek focused on the life of nomadic people, monasteries, wildlife, and the high-altitude lakes of Changthang. The trek starts at Rumtse in eastern Ladakh and finishes at Tso Moriri, crossing vast wilderness, several high passes, and long exposed sections where acclimatization matters as much as fitness. This is very different from Markha. There are fewer villages, more camp-based logistics, more time above serious altitude, and a stronger sense of moving across one large high-country system rather than following a valley of settlements. Along the way, the region can reveal kiang, Himalayan marmots, Tibetan antelope, ibex, and birdlife around the lake country. We recommend it for experienced trekkers who already know they enjoy multi-day high-altitude routes and want something more spacious, wilder, and less village-oriented.
